Demand is up for a Spot at UC Riverside
Freshman applications to UC Riverside jumped 8.5 percent in this last application cycle, and applications from transfer students went up a whopping 31.2 percent over last year.

President Obama Honors UCR Alumna, Dr. Marigold Linton '58
Marigold Linton of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians -- who In 1958 graduated from UC Riverside -- will receive an award from President Barack Obama for her lifelong work in mentoring American Indian and other minority students.

Winston Chung Commits to a $10 Million Gift to UC Riverside
The University of California, Riverside announced Monday that Winston Chung, a Chinese battery technology scientist, inventor and entrepreneur, has expressed his intent to give $10 million to support clean battery power, solar energy and sustainable transportation research at the Bourns College of Engineering.

UC Riverside Director of Men's Basketball Operations John Smallwood was in attendance at Saturday evening's Highlanders women's basketball game, and his name was drawn at random to take a half court shot during a timeout in the first half as part of a Bud's Tire Pros corporate partnership contest.

UCR Alumnus Michael HuertaMichael Huerta ('78 Political Science) is the U.S. Senate Deputy Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration. Michael was also a member of President Obama's transportation transition team. He held senior positions in the Clinton Administration's Transportation Department. He has served as Vice President for Affiliated Computer Services Inc. and is a member of C-CERT's board of advisers. Previously, Michael served as Executive Director of the Port of San Francisco and as Commissioner for the City of New York Department of Ports, International Trade and Commerce.

Hays Press-Enterprise Lecture

Jonathan Gold, Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic for the LA Weekly, will give the 43rd annual Hays Press-Enterprise Lecture on Wednesday, February 9, at 7:30 p.m. in University Theatre. A book signing and reception will take place immediately following the lecture.

The lecture is free and open to the public, and is scheduled as part of UCR's annual Writers Week.

Jonathan Gold is the restaurant critic for the LA Weekly, and was formerly the New York restaurant critic for Gourmet magazine. Although he has written about everything from $2,000 meals in Paris to illegal hot-dog vendors working from jerry-rigged shopping carts, Gold is perhaps best-known for his coverage of small, culturally specific restaurants, the subject of his book "Counter Intelligence: Where to Eat in the Real Los Angeles."

25th Anniversary Alumni Awards of Distinction

Alumni Award RecipientsHelp us to recognize outstanding alumni achievement as we celebrate 25 years of the Alumni Awards of Distinction. The alumni awards recognize alumni who have made a difference in the lives of others through outstanding professional, personal and community contributions. The deadline to submit names to the Alumni Office is March 15.

Nominations are now being sought for the 2011 awards in the following categories:

Distinguished Alumnus Award, Outstanding Young Almnus Award and the Alumni Service Award.
