Personal Memoir of Hurricane Katrina

Dispatch from Ellington Field: A Personal Memoir of Caring for the Victims of Hurricane Katrina

On August 31, 2005 as Hurricane Katrina was devastating the Gulf Coast, the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) was activated. That day a Patient Reception Team (PRT) was established at Ellington Field, comprised of physicians, nurses, and other service personnel. With the first C-130 military transport aircraft arriving that day at 9 p.m., the PRT set up triage for more than 700 patients from 21 flights in the next five days.

Leigh Bishop, M.D., '92 M.A., a psychiatrist at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, worked with the PRT at Ellington Field. His personal observations of the hurricane relief efforts in Houston can be found by visiting:
