Patricia O’Brien to receive the UCR Alumni Association
Distinguished Service Award

O'brien For nearly five years, Dean Pat O’Brien led the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences with vision and great judgment. During that time, she worked in close collaboration with UCR’s other college deans to develop new inter-disciplinary programs, enhanced existing distinguished programs, and developed new initiatives.


Join the UCR Alumni Association in honoring Dean O’Brien at its Annual Meeting on Thursday, May 27, 2004. Another highlight will be the announcement of the 2004 Parent of the Year award recipient. The evening will begin with a reception at 6 p.m. immediately followed by dinner in the Commons Dining Room. UC Riverside Announces Fall 2004 Freshman Admissions Data

Undergraduate admissions for the fall quarter of 2004 at the University of California, Riverside are down for the first time since 2000. The campus had been increasing admission offers by an average of 12 percent per year since 2000, but the state’s budget difficulties have called for enrollment reductions of 3,200 new students throughout the UC system for the fall 2004 term. UC Riverside’s Dean of Engineering Accepts Position at Buffalo

Satish K. Tripathi, dean of the Bourns College of Engineering at the University of California, Riverside has accepted the post of Provost of the State University of New York, Buffalo. The appointment is effective July 1. Click here for more information.

Construction Crews Place Final Steel Beam on UCR’s Palm Desert Campus

Construction crews place the final steel beam onto the frame of the two-building Palm Desert Campus of the University of California, Riverside today (April 30, 2004).

The construction benchmark comes four months and two days after the start-of-construction ceremony for the campus, which is expected to open for classes in the fall of 2005. The UCR Palm Desert Campus is being built on 20 acres on the northeast corner of Cook Street and Frank Sinatra Drive by Douglas E. Barnhart, Inc. of San Diego, in cooperation with UC Riverside. The Department of Theatre’s production archive features a recorded history of the theatre productions at UC Riverside since 1954 and includes photos accompanied with a list of the productions each academic year. Click here for more information.

Fire Damages UC Riverside Residence Hall Cafeteria

University of California, Riverside officials report a fire in the cafeteria of the Lothian Residence Hall, which was reported at approximately 12:20 a.m. on April 26, may have caused between $500,000 to $1 million worth of damage to the structure and its content. The fire was confined to the cafeteria area of the building affecting approximately 6,500 square feet of space. Click here for more information.

Graduate School of Education Forum

Alumni, students and friends are invited to attend an education forum to celebrate UCR’s 50th Anniversary at the University Theatre on Sunday, May 23, 2004. 2002 National Teacher of the Year, Chauncey Veatch, from Coachella Valley High School will deliver the keynote address. There will also be a special recognition of Professor Flora Ida Ortiz who is retiring after 32 years of service to the Graduate School of Education. A reception will take place after the program. Hollywood Bowl Outing

UCR alumni and friends are invited to join the Los Angeles Chapter of the UCR Alumni Association at their annual Hollywood Bowl outing on Saturday, August 21, 2004. The program for the evening will be "The Great American Concert with Fireworks - Walt Disney: 75 Years of Music." The chapter has reserved a picnic area so bring your family and your own picnic for some great fellowship prior to the concert. The deadline for reservations and payment is Friday, July 2, 2004. Bay Area Chapter to participate in the UC Alumni Night at the Opera – La Bohème

UCR alumni and friends are invited to join the Bay Area Alumni Chapter on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 for the performance by the San Francisco Opera of La Bohème. Often described as "the best love story ever sung," La Bohème follows the romance of the poet Rodolfo and the beautiful Mimì, set in the colorful garrets of Paris. Update your opera knowledge at the free pre-opera talk in the main theatre and learn something that will surely impress your friends and family.
