Wife of former UC Riverside Chancellor Dies Mrs. Hinderaker was an accomplished poet and a champion and supporter of the arts while at UC Riverside. She and son Mark collaborated on much of her published poetry – Birk providing the poetry and Mark the photography – which complemented her work. At UC Riverside, she highlighted local artists in the Chancellor's residence and encouraged them to display their art.

Brian Federici Receives Secretary's Annual Honor Award from USDA
The Secretary's Annual Honor Awards, which are presented by the Secretary of Agriculture, are the most significant recognition the USDA can bestow to acknowledge outstanding contributions to agriculture and to the consumers of agricultural products.

Córdova Offers Congratulations to UC President-Designate Dynes
UC
Riverside Chancellor, France A. Córdova issued the following statement
today, June 11, following the appointment of Robert C. Dynes as the new
president of the University of California. “On behalf of the
entire UC Riverside campus community, I want to extend a warm welcome to
President-Designate Dynes. We are fortunate to have the experience and
leadership he brings to this position as the university faces the many
opportunities and challenges before it.
Birk Hinderaker, the wife of Ivan Hinderaker, the longest serving UC Riverside Chancellor, died at her home in Corona del Mar on Thursday evening, June 19. She had been suffering severe heart problems the past six months. She was 87 years old.
Most Highly Cited Researchers at UCR
Nine scientists at UCR have been recognized as one of the most highly cited researchers in the world. The Institute for Scientific Information provides a website
(www.isihighlycited.com) identifying researchers, departments, laboratories and universities that have made fundamental contributions to the advancement of science and technology in the recent decade.
Brian
Federici, professor of entomology and entomologist at UC Riverside, has been recognized with one of the 2003 Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary's Annual Honor Awards in the category 'Promoting health by providing access to safe, affordable, and nutritious food.' The award was presented to Federici on Friday, June 13th, 2003, in Washington, DC.
The cover of the April 2003 issue of JALA, the Journal of the Association for Laboratory Automation, features UC Riverside researchers studying bio-sensing and highlights three Technical Report posters appearing in the issue by the same engineers.
The JALA cover story, "Young Scientists Excel at University of California - Riverside," profiles three student researchers, Shalini Prasad, Xuan Zhang
('03 M.S.) and Mo Yang, who work with Mihri Ozkan, assistant professor of electrical engineering and chemical/environmental engineering, and Cengiz Ozkan, assistant professor of mechanical engineering in the Bourns College of Engineering at UC Riverside.

Research Highlighted
When Dads Clean House, It Pays Off Big Time
Dads deserve a day off on Sunday, June 15. But on every other day they should know that when they do housework with their children, their kids turn out to be better adjusted and more socially aware. And, their wives find them more attractive.
Sociologists Scott Coltrane and Michele Adams ('98 M.A.) of the University of California, Riverside, looked at national survey data and found that school-aged children who do housework with their fathers are more likely to get along with their peers and have more friends. What’s more, they are less likely than other kids to disobey teachers or make trouble at school and are less depressed or withdrawn.

UCR Homecoming 2004 to Celebrate Campus’ 50th Anniversary!

calendars! UCR Homecoming 2004 will take place on January 21-24, 2004. Some classes and groups are already planning events. The UCRAA Web site will have a schedule of events once they have been

Museum of Photography: Preserving the Past
The UCR/California Museum of Photography houses the largest and most complete collection of stereographic images in the world, a remnant of the day when images for the binocular-like viewer were as popular in the family parlor between 1870 and 1940 as television is today.
