Large Release of Methane Could Cause Abrupt and Catastrophic Climate Change as Happened 635 Million Years Ago, UCR-led Study Warns - An abrupt release of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, about 635 million years ago from ice sheets that then extended to Earth’s low latitudes caused a dramatic shift in climate, triggering a series of events that resulted in global warming and effectively ended the last "snowball" ice age, a UC Riverside-led study reports. ..more

The Office of Alumni & Constituent Relations is seeking two dynamic individuals to join its professional staff. The Director of Student Relations orchestrates a robust student scholarship program, oversees the award winning Student Alumni Association, directs highly successful career conferences, coordinates volunteers for student recruitment and orientation events, and compiles alumni content for each issue of the UCR magazine. The Assistant to the Assistant Vice Chancellor provides critical executive level support, coordinates all aspects for UCR Alumni Association meetings, maintains alumni web sites and online networks, and publishes the monthly Highlander Highlights e-newsletter. Iceland: The Northern Lights and Lava Fields

The UCR Alumni Association, along with the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences and the Department of Physics and Astronomy, presents an Icelandic adventure in search of the aurora borealis. Join UCR alumni and friends for a nine day program that includes a visit to the Blue Lagoon on the lava-covered Reykjanes peninsula, a city tour of Reykjavik, a full day tour of Thingvellir landmark, Gulfoss Falls, and the Great Geyser, the south coast of Iceland to view Mt. Hekla and the Icelandic Folk Museum, and a tour of Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Dennis Mammana, sky photographer and astronomer, will lead an astronomical lecture and night sky viewing enrichment programs to further enhance your tour experience.

Contact the UCR Alumni Association to request a detailed brochure or to be placed on the Association’s travel list. Tour participants, whether UCR alumni or not, must be members of the UCR Alumni Association. Each member may bring one companion to travel as a guest.
