Dr. Glenn Nedwin ('81 Ph.D.) is chief science officer and president
with a growing biotech firm, Dyadic International. In the 1990s, as president of Novozymes, Inc., Glenn designed enzymes that nibbled at
the fabric in jeans, making them look stylishly worn-out. Then in 2000, he and his colleagues developed enzymes which would dissolve the fibers of most any plant
into a sugary mush which could then be fermented into cellulosic ethanol. Current U.S. ethanol refineries
use just the kernels of the corn plant. In theory, with Glenn's new enzymes it should be possible to
make a gallon of cellulosic ethanol using less land, and money, than it takes to make a gallon of
corn-based ethanol.
