UCR receives its largest gift: $15.5 million
Longtime friends William Austin and Bart Singletary ('86) have come together with their wives, Toby Austin and Barbara Singletary, to give $15.5 million to UC Riverside, its largest donation ever.
University officials say that the contribution will help boost the school's stature and case for a medical school. As a young man, Bart Singletary cleaned pots and hoed weeds at the former Citrus Experiment Station before it became UCR. In 1984, at age 57, he returned to school to get his bachelor's degree in political science. He graduated from UCR two years later. "I was born and raised in Riverside and this university is mine," he said. "I think it's a wonderful institution and I think it can be bigger and better and I'd like to do all I can...It did a lot for me."
