Astronomers
Identify New Type of Star
A new type of star has been discovered lurking as a low mass component in a very
compact binary star system. Astronomers Steve B. Howell of the University of
California, Riverside and Tom Harrison of New Mexico State University, Las
Cruces, announced today at the American Astronomical Society Meeting in Seattle,
Wash., that they have confirmed the existence of a new variety of stellar
end-product. This previously unknown type of star has some properties similar to
brown dwarf stars and may help astronomers understand some of the recently
discovered extra-solar planets in close proximity to their suns.
UC
Riverside Establishes Office Of Undergraduate Education
The University of California, Riverside announced the establishment of the
Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE) and named Robert L. Heath, professor of
plant physiology and biophysics, to serve as interim director. The new Office is
designed to function as a center to coordinate existing academic support
programs and develop a formal academic support structure for undergraduate
students. The OUE is the first step in what is planned to become a Division of
Undergraduate Education.
What
shall we talk about? New book by UC Riverside mathematician has 777 suggestions
Ever had difficulty getting a conversation started? John de Pillis, emeritus
professor of mathematics at UC Riverside, has useful suggestions to help us out.
His new book "777 Mathematical Conversation Starters" (The
Mathematical Association of America, 2002, 368 pages) shows that there are few
degrees of separation between mathematics and topics that provoke interesting
conversations.

All alumni will receive a postcard either through email or regular mail to call
Harris toll-free at 1-888-825-6082 and do a final verification of their
information. Alumni who missed the first deadline are encouraged to take
advantage of this easy and fast way to respond. Those who already returned their
questionnaire, with or without changes, are asked to call in to verify their
information.
Did you know that alumni giving is considered when universities are ranked
nationally? The percent of alumni giving serves as a proxy for how satisfied
students are with their alma mater. You can help UCR in the national rankings by
giving a gift, regardless of the dollar amount. To learn more about giving
opportunities at UCR and to make a donation online, visit www.annualfund.ucr.edu.
UCR is committed to attracting the best and brightest students and in doing so
continues to set enrollment records year after year. Fall
2002 total enrollment was 15,934, 10% more than the record-setting Fall 2001
enrollment. These increases are due in no small part to alumni participation in
UCR's recruitment efforts. Alumni volunteers serve as ambassadors at student
recruitment receptions throughout California, sharing their positive experiences
and memories of UCR. Alumni also share how they have benefited from their UCR
education. Help us in our pursuit of excellence by attracting outstanding,
well-prepared students to UCR. Click
here to see the calendar of 2003 recruitment events. For more information or
to participate in these events please contact Bill
Cole.

The
Lithic Technology Laboratory
was established at UCR in 1993 to provide a setting, facilities, and
expertise for the development of a broad specialization in the technology of
stone tools. This laboratory offers the only academic program in the country
that emphasizes replicative experimentation as fundamental for addressing
problems in prehistoric stone-tool economies.
