Proposition 92

Community college funding on February state ballot

Surveys show Californians recognize that proper funding for public colleges and universities is essential to maintaining educational quality and opportunity. However, there are many views about the best way to achieve that goal, given the state’s limited budget resources.

Prop. 92 would guarantee the state’s community colleges more than 10% of Prop. 98 educational funding and lower their students’ fees. Prop. 92 would require the state to spend more for K-14 education than under current law – nearly $1 billion over the next three years. The University of California Board of Regents and the California State University Trustees have both voted to oppose Prop. 92. While opposing the measure, the UC Regents expressed strong support for the University’s vital partnerships with the two-year colleges. In fact, nearly a third of UC’s undergraduate students transfer from community colleges.
