Researchers Discover New Way to Boost Grain Crops’ Drought Tolerance
Researchers at the University of California, Riverside
report the development of technology that increases the
tolerance of grain crops to drought by decreasing the
amount of an enzyme that is responsible for producing the
plant hormone ethylene.

Monitors that can sense too much fertilizer in a running river

million National Science Foundation project at UC Riverside.

Strong, Yet Gentle, Acid Uncovered
Researchers at the University of California, Riverside
have discovered the world’s strongest acid. Remarkably it
is also the gentlest acid. This non-toxic and non-corrosive
acid may have a role in processes such as improving the
quality of gasoline, developing polymers and synthesizing
pharmaceuticals.

UC Riverside Visiting Scholar Dies
Neil A. Campbell '75 Ph.D., the author of a widely-used
introductory college biology textbook and a visiting scholar at
the University of California, Riverside, died Thursday, Oct. 21
at Redlands Community Hospital after suffering heart failure.
He was 58.
Dr. Campbell received his doctorate in plant biology at
UCR in 1975, after which he taught at Pomona College, Cornell
University and San Bernardino Valley College before returning to
UC Riverside in 1989. While at San Bernardino Valley College, Dr.
Campbell received that college’s first Outstanding Professor
Award. Upon his return to UCR, he worked in the Department of
Botany and Plant Sciences as a specialist in biology education,
including the development and evaluation of new instructional media.

Switzerland Awaits You
The UCR Alumni Association invites you to journey through the
spectacular scenery of the Bernese Oberland on its Switzerland –
Interlaken program. The charming lakeside resort of Interlaken
offers an ideal setting to experience the beauty and history of
this Alpine wonderland. The nine-day tour departs July 27 and is
priced at $3,295 with roundtrip airfare from Los Angeles or San
Francisco. The tour price includes seven nights accommodations,
three meals each day during the program, all excursions listed
on the itinerary, and the services of an experienced campus
director. A land only program is also available for $1,995.
Tour participants must be members of the UCR Alumni Association.
Each member may bring a spouse and children under 18 or one guest.
